My Philosophy of Teaching
When starting the school year, it is important that I know the specific learning goals that I want my students to reach by the end of the year. Through my teaching, I want my students to grow in skills like collaboration, creativity, self-assessment and more. My hope is by the end of the year, they should be more knowledgeable about different art techniques and artists. There will be times where students will be put in groups for art critiques. This will give them the opportunity to work on communication skills by explaining their art as well as learning how to give and receive feedback. Students will expand on their skills and creativity through projects and exercises.

I want my teaching to be student centered. Every classroom is going to be different, and I need to be able to teach in a way that will best work for each class dynamic. I will ask students for feedback on what they want to learn about and then incorporate it in a way that still follows state curriculum. Students will use technology to look up reference pictures and do research for their projects. They will make online process boards to document their progress and ideas. This will help me assess where they are and how well they learned what I taught.

I will use both formative and summative assessments. I will use formative assessments in art critiques, projects and end of class questions; students will also give and receive peer feedback and share ideas during critiques. Students will show techniques and creativity through projects. They will have a rubric detailing what their art piece needs to include, but how they incorporate those requirements is up to them. I will give students feedback through the entire process and allow them to resubmit projects with changes to improve their grade. At the end of class, I will ask them to answer targeted questions on a piece of paper such as, “what is one question you have?” My summative assessment will be a portfolio at the end of the class. This will show me all the work they have completed in the class.

As a teacher, I want to be compassionate, have good communication, patience, and other attributes such as these. I want my students to feel safe and know they can come to me when they have questions or problems. The first step in this is having good relationships with my students. Asking questions and engaging in their interests will help me build this connection. I want my classroom to reflect my values as a teacher.

I will have fun Friday in my classroom. This is a day where we will watch a movie, and students can work on whatever they want. My students only get fun Friday if they were good during the week. If they were misbehaving and not getting work done Friday will act as a normal class period that week. If a student that is usually good in my class misbehaves, I will talk to them quick after class and see if there is something going on. My classroom should be a place where students feel they can explore and try new things. I want them to not be afraid of failure and know that this is a place they can grow. Art can be scary when you feel like you aren’t any good. I want them to feel safe in knowing that I’m not grading their skills, but their effort.
